Deepika's 'Piku' overshadows Ranbir's 'Bombay Velvet'

New Delhi: Ranbir Kapoor-starrer "Bombay Velvet" has failed to displace Deepika Padukone's simple, subtle and meaningful act as a dutiful daughter in "Piku", box office figures suggest.
"A colossal flop", "a debacle", "a disaster" are some of the verdicts by film trade analysts on Anurag Kashyap's high-budget drama "Bombay Velvet", which is set in the Bombay of the 1960s and about a man who wants to make it big in life at any cost.
The film has earned a little over Rs.16 crore in its opening weekend.
Released on May 15, the film, which also stars Anushka Sharma and has marked the acting debut of Karan Johar, only managed to mint Rs.5.20 crore on its opening day and Rs.5.10 crore and Rs.5.80 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Its weekend total amounts to Rs.16.10 crore, according to trade expert Taran Adarsh, who on Twitter called the film a “debacle”.
"It's very bad. 'Bombay Velvet' earned just 16.25 crore. That should have been the day 1 collection instead of the weekend collection," trade analyst Komal Nahta told IANS.
"But you can't compare 'Bombay Velvet' to other films because of its budget of Rs.108 crore. With that amount, it should have collected Rs.15 crore on day 1. The film is a colossal flop," he added.
Another film expert, Vinod Mirani said "'Bombay Velvet' is a disaster".
However, Kashyap has no regrets that the audience is not finding a connect with his film, which has been his dream project since nine years.
"A lot of people do not connect with it and a small number of people did... Maybe our experimenting with the narrative didn't work for most but I firmly believe in the film,” he posted on his Facebook page.
The one film which has continued its success story is Shoojit Sircar's slice-of-life entertainer "Piku", which has Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan and Deepika telling an endearing family tale through their lovable characters.
“Piku” is running successfully at the cinemas and has minted Rs.14.60 crore in its second weekend, which takes its total collection to Rs.56.02 crore. In its opening weekend, it minted over Rs.25 crore.
Also, the film is being tagged as a hit overseas as it has earned $4.3 million (Rs.27.34 crore).
In fact, Adarsh has called “Piku” the “BIGGEST HIT of 2015 in Overseas”.
As far as the future of “Bombay Velvet” and "Piku" on the box office is concerned, it will be decided by Kangana Ranaut and R. Madhavan-starrer “Tanu Weds Manu Returns”, which has quite a positive buzz about it.
Directed by Anand L. Rai, the film, which stars the same cast from 2011 film “Tanu Weds Manu”, will release on Friday.

Mother always our first love: Ranbir Kapoor

Panaji: He's always guarded when speaking about his romantic relationships -- but one "love"Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor is always willing to shower compliments on is his mother Neetu Singh.
Ahead of Mother's Day, being celebrated on Sunday, Ranbir told IANS: "I don't believe in Mother's Day. A mother is always our first love, and our last love, and there's no greater relationship than a child and mother.
"We are what we are because of our mother. And I hope I can keep my mother happy, smiling and positive always, and that she enjoys all her life. That's my top priority."
Son of veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu, he makes no bones about admitting that he has been "closer to my mom".
"My dad had a busy life and the kind of personality he had... didn't match my temperament. So we didn't have a buddy-buddy relationship, but I am grateful for my father's energy in my life because it keeps me on my toes. He's my reality check, he's someone I have to make proud.
"He's not easily swayed, and he speaks his mind. And it's a relationship I deeply respect -- I hope I can keep his head flying," added the 32-year-old, who is currently awaiting the release of his "most intense film" -- Anurag Kashyap's "Bombay Velvet".

Mumbai: Actor Ranbir Kapoor has finally confirmed his relationship with actress Katrina Kaif after years of dodging media speculations and also revealed he will marry her by the end of next year.
Ranbir, who is usually guarded about his personal life and his closeness with Katrina even as they continued to be spotted together, opened up about the actress in an interview to a daily.
"This year both of us are extremely busy, so there won't be any time for the marriage. We have planned to tie the knot by the end of next year. Both of us have agreed on that," Ranbir said.
The actor further went on to say, "Both of us are sure about our relationship and if we don't open about it now, it would be showing disrespect to the relationship. I am 33 now and it is time I have my family. Even Katrina wants that. I have grown up in a family where film is everything. So, I know the importance of gossip and my funda is simple. When there is gossip, try not to react and it is advisable not to think too much about yourself."

They later starred together in Prakash Jha's "Raajneeti" (2010). The duo will be next seen in "Jagga Jasoos", slated to release next year.
While Ranbir, 33, previously dated actress Deepika Padukone, the 31-year-old "Bang Bang!" star was in a long-term relationship with superstar Salman Khan before.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone go out on a workout date!

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone go out on a workout date!

The former lovebirds are in Delhi shooting for their upcoming film, and contrary to reports, the duo is having quite a time in the capital. Read on to know more…

After Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are all set to recreate magic with their crackling chemistry in the upcoming film, Tamasha, which is being directed by Imtiaz Ali.
Going by some behind-the-scene pictures of the two that have been leaked on the internet, I am sure the duo will get everyone talking with their onscreen chemistry. However, off-screen scene was a tad bit different for the recent reports of a rift between the former lovebirds set the gossip mills buzzing.
Word has it that both Ranbir and Deepika apparently requested for different flights to travel abroad for the first schedule of the movie. Then, the ex-flames requested for rooms on different floors of the hotel they were supposed to be staying in during the film’s shoot.
However, it is learnt that contrary to all these reports, Ranbir and Deepika are very much on cordial terms. More so, both actors are very particular about their fitness regime and workout together. “They aren’t best of friends but care about each other. They talk when needed. They do hang out sometimes post their shoot but there is nothing more to it than that,” a source was quoted by a tabloid.
