A R Rahman ventures into script-writing, film production

A R Rahman ventures into script-writing, film production

Two-time Academy Award-winning music composer A R Rahman is now donning a different hat and is working on his own screenplay after he felt challenged to try a genre different than music.
Rahman was in the city for the world premiere of 'Jai Ho' on February 25, a new documentary about his life and astounding career that was screened at the prestigious Museum of the Moving Image here before a packed theatre.
The musician said the idea of film producing and script writing came to him as he wanted to challenge himself by moving beyond the realm of music and trying something new.
Rahman, who has composed music for over 100 Hindi and Tamil films as well as for Hollywood projects, said there is a sort of repetition in the way songs are composed for Indian movies. He said every movie ends up having a few melodious numbers and an item song.
"How much can you do that. You have done it all, so for me to force myself to challenge myself, I thought let me build my own platform to challenge myself. So this idea of film producing and script writing came about," he said, adding that the casting for his first film has already begun. He, however, did not give further details of the movie. He added that when he was working on the British musical 'Bombay Dreams', he was asked by its composer Andrew Lloyd Webber if he had some story ideas. Rahman replied that he was a music composer and did not have any story ideas of his own.
"But one day I thought why not," he said, adding that when he observed people from various cultures he would wonder what their story would be and that is what got him interested in script writing.
Rahman, 48, best known in the US for his Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy-winning score for Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire', however ruled out donning the director's hat, saying since he is an "introvert" he does not see himself as a director.
'Jai Ho' is a 60-minute film directed by National Award winning producer and director Umesh Aggarwal. The title of the documentary is derived from the hugely popular eponymous song composed by Rahman for 'Slumdog Millionaire'. It has become a cult anthem and is performed by singers from across the world. "We are honored to be hosting A R Rahman, an icon of Indian music, and the world premiere of Jai Ho," said David Schwartz, the Museum's Chief Curator.
"While 'Slumdog Millionaire' brought him to the attention of many Americans, Rahman has had a long and accomplished career in India and abroad for nearly two decades. This intimate and exciting documentary shows why he is widely regarded as one of the world's great film composers."
The documentary traces milestones in Rahman's personal and professional life and features concert footage and interviews with Rahman, his mother and sister. It also features conversations with Boyle, Webber, Indian directors Shekhar Kapur, Subhash Ghai and Mani Ratnam and lyricists Gulzar and Javed Akhtar who throw light about the way Rahman changed Indian and global music with his unconventional tunes. Jai Ho, produced by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust of India, explores the evolution of Rahman's style of music - a fusion of Eastern sensibilities and Western technology.
Spanning across Los Angeles, London, Chennai and Bombay, the film reveals an unseen narrative of the Indian icon who is "no less than a global phenomenon."
Rahman also talks about his struggles after his father passed away when he was very young, his decision to convert to Islam and how his music aims convey the universal language of compassion and love.
Rahman said he was initially reluctant to have a film made on him as he felt he "was not worth it". After he agreed to have a documentary made on him, he said he wanted that it should be simple and be able to inspire people and not go over the top about his accomplishments and awards.

'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' review: Warm, fuzzy sweetness set in reality

'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' review: Warm, fuzzy sweetness set in reality

A good cast is the best thing that can happen to a movie. It is especially great when all of them not only look perfect for their respective roles but also individually give their best to the film. 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' is the perfect example of this fact.
The effort that has gone in to making this sweet romantic comedy set in the small backdrop of Rishikesh and Haridwar, is apparent.
The plot is easy to predict but the performances would blow your mind. Whether it is Ayushmann Khurrana as a good-for-nothing dreamer or Bhumi Pedneker playing the strong willed educated girl with a dream of being a school teacher.
Bhumi is perhaps the best debut actress that Bollywood has seen in the past few years. She is genuinely a good actress, has a great screen presence and looks beautiful as Sandhya. Her struggles with being fat does not curb her spirit and that is what the audience will take from this movie.
The straight from the heart storyline will take you back the memory lanes. The director has taken his time to wind you in his 90s memorabilia starting with the charm of listening to cassettes – complete with how we wound them up patiently and how our favourite songs were put together in one cassette with stickers telling us the playlist. There were also the scooters which one had to carefully balance upon to get from one place to another. All in all the nostalgia of the last decade of the 20th century has been beautifully recreated in the film.
The director has kept the characters strong and the story concise. Even with the predictability of the movie the growing chemistry between Ayushmann and Bhumi is worth watching.
Sanjay Mishra, Sheeba Chadda, Alika Amin and Seema Pahwa (one who played Mishra's wife in 2014's critically acclaimed movie 'Aankhon Dekhi') are perfect supporting cast for the love story.
Sharat Kataria who is known for his quirky endeavours 'Bheja Fry' and 'Bheja Fry 2' has proved his genius once more with 'Dum Laga ke...'. While his last ventures focussed on urban characters, his now semi-urban story also is spot on.
The movie steers clear of exaggerated feelings and speaks of some real situations and real disappointments without being didactic. The fat girl, who has to overcome the prejudices her husband has about her, is not however the unimaginative loser that we have seen in Bollywood so far. She is educated and has an ambition – therefore lucrative for her in-laws. But they don't take advantage of her. Even with the usual Indian taunting by the Bua, the family mostly supports her and considers her feelings. The girl herself knows how to stand up to the world.
This modern thinking without the preachiness is refreshing. Kataria has excelled in making you feel for his characters.
The background score by the Italian composer Andrea Guerra is perfect and Anu Mallik's comeback is laudable. While 'Moh Moh Ke Dhage' (both Monali Thakur's and Papon's versions) is perhaps his best composition till date, the quirky 'Sundar Susheel... ' (Malini Awasthi, Rahul Ram) sets the mood of the film pretty nicely. The Kumar Sanu fandom has been revived in this film and he brings back the memories of his heyday..
The shots (Manu Anand) of the Rishikesh and Haridwar too are beautiful and one wonders how they found the two towns empty enough to shoot since they are thronged with tourists throughout the year.
This movie is a feel good package and a must watch for those born in the 80s and the 90s simply to relive the decade. For those who are not, go for the performances. It is rare that a Bollywood movie makes you all warm, fuzzy and gooey from the inside – the experience is a must for those who love cinema.

17 actors in Rohit Shetty's next Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol starrer?

17 actors in Rohit Shetty's next Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol starrer?

First there was news of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol having being roped in for Rohit Shetty's next. Now it seems that it may not be just them in the film.
According to reports in a leading daily, SRK revealed in a press conference that there would be not just two, or four or even ten stars – but a whopping 17 stars would be cast in Shetty's next venture.
Kajol has already said yes to the project ( hopefully) and Varun Dhawan – Kirti Sanon maybe the other lead pair in the film. Now the question is whether the number of stars appearing in the movie are merely for a guest appearance like in 'Om Shanti Om' or will all of them have a more important role to play.
Rohit has had a flair for multi starrers. His 'Golmaal' series was well received by the audience. He has also had a successful stint with Shah Rukh with 'Chennai Express' breaking several Box-Office records.
If these rumours are true then Rohit Shetty has made a casting coup of a lifetime. And boy! Surely people would be more than ready to go for it. Now it is just a guessing game of who's in and who's out!

Rs 200 crore riding on Salman Khan

Arms Act case verdict on March 3; Rs 200 crore riding on Salman Khan

With Rs 200 crore riding on Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, the deferment of the Arms Act case verdict till March 3 has provided a small window of relief to producers of his two films that are set to release this year.
The 49-year-old actor is currently in Gondal near Rajkot, Gujarat for Sooraj Barjatya's 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo'.
His other film 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' being directed by 'Ek Tha Tiger' helmer Kabir Khan has wrapped up shooting and is currently in post production stage for a mid-year release.
Bollywood trade analyst Komal Nahta said Salman has approximately Rs 150 crore riding on him for these two films alone, besides another Rs 50 crore for the projects that he has signed
"If you take Rs 75 crore each for these two films, it comes to a total of Rs 150 crore. And then if you add another Rs 50 crore for the projects that he has signed, it comes to Rs 200 crore. There is some amount of tension but the actor has the option to further appeal his case," Nahta told PTI.
The Arms Act case against Salman is an offshoot of the Blackbuck poaching incident 16 years ago near Jodhpur.

Salman was in the area to shoot for Barjatya's 'Hum Saath-Saath Hain' in 1998.

Katrina Kaif reveals secrets behind her glowing skin

Katrina Kaif reveals secrets behind her glowing skin

Don't take your skin for granted, says actress Katrina Kaif, who believes in the use of sunscreen, right intake of water and ensures that her makeup is removed well. The brand ambassador of the skincare range of L’Oreal Paris also says that women must take care of their body and skin according to their age.
"We shouldn't take our skin for granted, especially since we are often exposed to dirt, heat and pollution daily. We should never underestimate the need for a sunscreen to protect your skin from strong UV rays," the 31-year-old said.
"Through the day I drink lots of fluids, especially water to have my face feel fresh and hydrated. I always remove my makeup once I'm home for the day/night and use a moisturiser to not let my skin dry, even when I'm at home," she added.
L'Oreal Paris's Skin Perfect range is backed by 10 years of research at the global and Indian L'Oreal Research and Innovation Labs. The new range from the brand addresses the skincare needs specific to that age.
Talking about the need for a range that suits different age groups, she said: "Every decade in a woman's life comes with a changing set of priorities. It also comes with a changing set of skincare needs. L'Oreal Paris is addressing these needs of every Indian woman who might be prone to skin problems at some point in her life."
Katrina agrees that while women are asked to take care of their skin with home remedies and traditional beauty products in addition to maintaining healthy food habits, from a young age, she stresses on the need to use special products later in life.
"As we grow older, the demands of a hectic lifestyle take a toll on your body and your skin. This is why, it is essential to use products that replenish the vitality of your skin. Through its Skin Perfect range, L'Oreal Paris has personalised skincare for every age group, making it easy for Indian consumers to improve their skin tone leaving it with a healthy glow," she added.
The Skin Perfect collection comprises three ranges to address skincare issues at every age -- 20+, 30+ and 40+.
For the brand, Katrina has shot for a television commercial with Lisa Ray, who has been signed by L'Oreal Paris to endorse the new range. Katrina says Lisa is an absolute professional and full of life.
